Nice post, and I'm glad to see you are capturing rain. I didn't know it was illegal in Colorado - I wonder why, when it makes such good sense for conservation? We're currently researching options and we plan to install as many barrels as I can get Garden Man to agree to!

Randy - our barrel came with the rain water diverter. We will be doing something a bit different with our next setup for the vegetable garden since the barrels don't have the hardware yet.

Emily - I'll tell my site designer (my husband) that you liked the mods. Thanks!

It was very interesting to read your post. My husband is in theprocess of turning a milk barrell (plastic barrel from a farm) into our rain water barrel. I have a section of my yard that is under pine trees and gets so little water even under heavy rain. So I will use this to keep it watered since my hose barely reaches there. It's nice to hear that people are doing this sort of thing. I am surprised to hear that it isn't allowed in Colorado. That's too bad. Thanks for sharing your info.

Hi, great article! Glad you could get such nice wine barrels so cheap. I recently saw in a small town here in NC a garden that had a downspout going out 12 foot across the top a fence secured to the posts. Then the downspout emptied into a re claimed pickle barrel ($10-$15 each here). The pickle barrel was just one of 6 in a row on a 3 foot high platform overlooking the garden. This was very cool.

I see you bought the rain water diverter , around here they sell those pieces of garbage for $70, yes all $3 worth of plastic. We just run the downspout right into our barrels with a $3 elbow.

Love the oak barrels! I live in Bourbon country, so surely I can find barrels around here. Also thankful we are allowed to use rain barrels. In fact, you can purchase them from our city's waste services division! Love your Thesis mods also- looks great.
